Object Conservation
Object conservation is responsible for the preservation, treatment, and technical study of sculpture and decorative arts in the collection that are stored and displayed throughout the museum campus, including outdoors. Works of art in our care are fashioned from an expansive range of organic, inorganic, and composite materials that can be especially challenging when combined materials are incompatible with each other. We work with colleagues in the scientific research department to analyze materials to understand how they age and interact with one another. This collaboration helps to inform how we care for our diverse collection.
The study of how objects are fabricated adds to our intimate understanding of objects and helps guide the object conservation team on how best to preserve the artworks. Our combined study and treatment of the objects in our care helps us to develop new ways for visitors to experience the collection. At the same time, we strive to contribute to the field of conservation and aid the advancement of art historical scholarship.
